Lawrence Woodmere Academy’s English department prepares our students to enter the academic discourse of college life with confidence. Through student-led academic discussions, our students are encouraged to better their minds and the minds of others. Exposure to literature from around the globe opens students to new ideas, allows them to formulate their own opinions, and enables them to find their voices.

Writing well is the key to thinking well and having one’s thoughts heard. Developing strong writing skills is at the center of every LWA English course. Students learn to write in descriptive, informational, narrative, and persuasive modes, and they gain intensive practice in grammar and rhetoric. Our teachers guide each student’s individual growth toward the rich and articulate written expression that will open doors for them in any field.

Lawrence Woodmere Academy’s college-style Writing Center gives our students a resource that few schools have: peer tutoring and coaching at all stages of the writing process. Studies show that using a Writing Center correlates with increased success in all academic disciplines. Students who train to be peer tutors enjoy the additional advantage of learning a marketable skill that they can put to use immediately upon entering college.
