A Celebration of (LWA) Poets

Creative Communications, Inc. has selected ten poets from Mrs. Komisarow’s Seventh Grade English class to be featured in their anthology entitled A Celebration of Poets. Thousands of students enter poems that encompass their fears, hopes, and dreams for this contest. Congratulations!
LWA Participates in Protein Modeling Challenge

Lawrence Woodmere Academy placed first, second, and fourth in the Protein Modeling Challenge, hosted by Stony Brook University Center for Science and Mathematics Education on Friday, April 3. The three part challenge consisted of a pre-built model, and on-site model, and an on-site exam.
Author and Academy Alumna Shares Talents with LWA Juniors

On Monday, March 30th, seventeen Upper School students participated in a writing workshop led by Laurie Stone, Woodmere Academy class of 1964. Ms. Stone then went on to address the entire Upper School at Headmaster's Homeroom.
LWA Coaches Go to Battle Against Cancer

From March 3-10, teachers and students at LWA raised money for "Coaches vs. Cancer," a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
LWA Basketball Program Is Represented in the Big East Tournament by Tyrone Nash

The Lawrence Woodmere Academy basketball program is represented in the Big East Tournament by Tyrone Nash, LWA class of 2007. Nash is a sophomore at Notre Dame and will play against West Virginia tonight at Madison Square Garden as his former basketball coach, Jeff Weiss, watches in the audience.

Second Grade Holds Disability Workshop

On Friday, March 6, the second grade took part in a Disability workshop where they experienced what it would be like to be blind, deaf, or even dyslexic. "Communities are the focus of our Second Grade Social Studies

Boys Varsity Basketball Team Reaches State Semi-Finals

It didn't matter what the scoreboard said. Lawrence Woodmere Academy's Holden Collick refused to stop hustling. He pounded the boards, putting back one missed shot after another. He even showed he wasn't afraid to do a guard's job, taking the ball coast to coast for an easy lay-in. There were few things Collick didn't do yesterday against Our Savior Lutheran (Bronx). But he said that if given a choice, he'd much rather impress the crowd with his defensive stops than with his smooth jump shots or points in the paint.
LWA Middle School Holds Its Science Fair

The Lawrence Woodmere Academy Middle School science fair was held on Wednesday, March 4th. Grades five through eight presented their interest-based topics which they had been working on for three and a half months.
LWA Middle School Students Participate in Nassau County Anti-bias Consortium Book Talk

Daphny Milord (grade 5) and Angelique Romulus (grade 7) attended the annual Middle School Book Talk of the Nassau County Anti-Bias Consortium on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 held at Oceanside Middle School. The students each read a different book from a suggested reading list on the topic of bias or relational aggression and then participated in a discussion of their book with a group of students from middle schools from around Nassau County who had read the same books.
LWA Celebrates Black History Month

On Wednesday, February 25, LWA celebrated Black History Month with an assembly celebrating "African American Firsts." The presentation included a welcome by parent Aida Berry, a closing by parent Paula Alleyne, and a special introduction by parent Andre Horn for twelfth grade student Douglas Bonner posing as President Barack Obama.
Williams Helps LWA Repeat as PSAA Champs

If there was any doubt about Lawrence Woodmere Academy capturing back-to-back PSAA championships in boys basketball, such notions were quickly put to rest as the top-seeded Tigers cruised to a 52-30 victory over Martin Luther of Queens last night.

Nadia Williams hit a three-pointer with 40 seconds left as No. 1 Lawrence Woodmere Academy (18-1) beat No. 2 Our Savior New American, 43-41, to capture the IPPSAL Championship yesterday at Upper Room. Williams had nine points and Ataya Horn added 22 points and 15 rebounds.
Valentine's Day for Veterans

On Wednesday, February 11, a legislative aide of James Darcy, Councilman for the Third District, came to collect the Valentine's Day cards our Lower School created for Valentine's for Veterans. The cards, which include a message of gratitude to the men and women who have served, were delivered to veterans' organizations who then distribute them to veterans of wars from World War II to the Iraq War
LWA Holds First Ever Middle School Character Education Day
February 12, 2009
On Tuesday, February 10, the LWA Middle School had the first ever LWA Character Education Day for all students in grade 5-8. The goal of this day was to kick off a program Donna Linton, Middle School Director, had developed with guidance from our school psychologist, Limor Tintweiss. The program was designed to address issues of relational aggression and bullying, and to strengthen the empathy and ethical ideals embodied in our LWA community.

The student body roared at Lawrence Woodmere Academy as Barack Obama was sworn in a President of the United States. Kindergarten students and seniors stomped on the floor and waved their flags, no matter their political affiliation or country of origin. "The atmosphere of the student body was a lot different from my peers in Korea. My Korean friends aren't invested in the political process, and here they stood on their chairs and cheered" said Jenny Yoon, a senior from Korea.
LWA Sustainability Club Makes a Difference

On Friday, January 16, the Lawrence Woodmere Academy Sustainability Club unveiled new recycling bins following a school-wide education project which included presentations, music videos, and digitally designed instructional posters. The LWA Sustainability Club was formed to create programs that effect the school’s environmental impact and to educate the school community on sustainability.
