kindergarten studies korean

October 19, 2007

Global awareness starts early here at LWA, just ask any Kindergarten student. The class has recently begun their study of the Korean Language, led by Caroline Kim, Middle and Upper School English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher.

“The earlier you introduce them to a foreign language, the more their ear attunes to it,” Bonnie Pinkow, Kindergarten teacher, said. “The world is not made up of all English speakers, and this opens them up to a whole world of different cultures.”

The class has been learning simple colors, songs and vocabulary. Last week they colored both the American and Korean flags so that they could not only make a comparison, but practice the names of the colors in the flags.

“Using their prior knowledge of vocabulary and building on it with Korean words helps them firmly develop awareness of other cultures, at an age when they can easily add it to their lexicon,” Caroline Kim, their Korean teacher, said.
