middle school students pursue global citizenship

September 28, 2007

On Friday, September 28, our Middle School students will begin their pursuit of global citizenship through Concern Worldwide, an organization committed to the relief, assistance and advancement of people in need in the least developed areas of the world.

Delia Dunlap, an Education Officer for The Global Concerns Project, which seeks to increase awareness and understanding of current international issues, will be visiting the Middle School every Friday for the rest of the semester this year. She will work with Miss Lea Trojanowski, the faculty advisor for the FAME (Fine Arts and Miscellaneous Electives) class “Global Concerns.” Students will be learning about global topics of child labor, women's rights, clean water and education for all.

"We want to make students aware of issues that exist in the world and their possible solutions. We are responsible for educating our students so that they will be conscientious global citizens in our school community and beyond," Donna Linton, Middle School Director, said.

The subject of the first session is Dunlap's recent journey to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and her findings about the day to day reality of life there.

In their FAME class, the students will be expected to research topics covered, present their findings and help educate their school community. Their efforts will include presentations in Hessel Hall for the Middle School as well as creating posters and other written material to share the information with the greater community.
