LWA Girls' Varsity soccer Season Is Off to a Great Start

September 19, 2007

It was déjà vu for many members of the Lawrence Woodmere Academy Girl's Varsity Soccer Team yesterday. They celebrated a 3-2 victory over the Long Island Lutheran Crusaders, whom they beat 3-0 for the PSAA championship last October.

"I think the girls are motivated, they've taken on the challenge to repeat as league champions- which would be a remarkable feat. The past couple years we took baby steps; we're trying to progress and keep improving. We have a senior driven team so they're feeling the pressure," Coach John Schandler said.

The team isn't living in the past, however. Coach Schandler urged the girls at halftime to be patient, but persistent. LWA scored in the 62nd minute with an impressive goal by Jordan Karson with an assist from her sister Kendall. Pammy Boneparth and Dominique Walker also contributed with one goal each.

"We dominated play for the majority of the 80 min. We had a penalty kick that we weren't able to score on, and their goalie had great saves. Long Island Lutheran scored the first goal, so it motivated us to consider how we could regain control."

LWA's next game is on Monday, September 24, at Poly Prep Country Day School.

"It's a non league game for us, so we're hoping it will help us prepare for the state tournament."
