Religious and Secular Schools Join for Community's Benefit
The LWA 7th and 8th Grade Chorus will participate in the Five Towns Community Chest's newest event The Five Towns Sings, on February 12, 2007 at The Sands at Atlantic Beach. This groundbreaking concert will bring together choral groups from local public and private schools including Woodmere Middle School, Lawrence Middle School, The Brandeis School, HAFTR, and Lawrence Woodmere Academy. The goals of this event are to encourage goodwill and cooperation between the diverse groups in the community while raising funds to help residents in need.

Justin Stahl Presents Gavel to Headmaster Bernstein
From December 7th through December 10th, fifteen Lawrence Woodmere Academy Upper School students attended the Princeton Model United Nations Conference. In the five years that LWA has participated in the conference, a student has either brought back a gavel or received a commendation three times. This year, Justin Stahl '07 of Oceanside was awarded with a gavel for his excellence in serving as a historian in the formation of Turkey in 1923.

Caroline Boneparth's Tar Heels Win NCAA Championship
Caroline Boneparth, '06, particpated in the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer National Championship tournament, as a freshman member of the University of North Carolina team. The UNC Tar Heels beat Notre Dame 2 - 1 n the Women's College Cup Title Game.

Broadway Actor, Dan Entriken, Speaks to LWA Musical Cast
On February 10, 2007 the Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA) Upper School will perform the musical, 1776. On November 16, 2006, the cast was treated to a visit from Dan Entriken who played Roger Sherman of Connecticut in the original Broadway production of the show in 1969. Mr. Entriken went on to play Caesar Rodney of Delaware and Edward Rutledge of South Carolina on the National Tour. After 1776, he played for many opera houses including the San Francisco Opera, The Baltimore Opera and the Philadelphia Opera. Most recently, Mr. Entriken played Papignol in the Broadway production of La Boheme from 2002 to 2003. He currently performs with the A Capella Quartet, The Clustertones.

LWA Teacher Reminds Studenst to Give Back
"Remember to count all your blessings," is the headline nestled in the midst of a display featuring 30 depictions with accompanying captions of Honduras that include an image of the developing country's water supply, several young orphans, an ancient bicycle, and a makeshift store. The collection hangs prominently in the hall of LWA and was compiled from over 800 photographs taken by Marc Hoyle, current Dean and History Coordinator at LWA, and Rich Law, former Director of Technology when they visited a school and an orphanage in Valle de Angeles, Honduras last summer.

LWA Junior Named Student Leader by Bank of America
Each year, as part of its Neighborhood Excellence Initiative, The Bank of America Foundation chooses five Long Island students as "Student Leaders" in recognition of the impact they have made on their communities. The students are rewarded with the opportunity to participate in an eight-week paid internship with a local community-based organization.

LWA Girls' Varsity Soccer Team Makes History
On Thursday, October 26th, the Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA) Girls' Varsity Soccer Team made history by winning their first Private School Athletic Association (PSAA) Championship. They beat Long Island Lutheran (LuHi), 3 - 0, at the Metropolitan Oval in Queens. This was a rematch of last year's final, in which LuHi beat LWA 4 - 3.

LWA Off and Running
In the fall of 2005, Tony Sparandara, a new faculty member at Lawrence Woodmere Academy, joined LWA after serving 36 years at Lawrence High School, 23 as Cross Country/Track Coach. He and Bobby Schaefer, another faculty member, founded the LWA Running Club. This year the club has expanded to compete in the IPPSAL League as a Varsity Cross Country Team. There are 12 members of the club, seven who compete in meets, and five who run recreationally.

LWA's Nash Commits to Notre Dame
All-Long Island forward Tyrone Nash took the next step in his young basketball career yesterday when he orally committed to Notre Dame, according to his high school coach, Jeff Weiss. The 6-7 Nash, a former Lawrence Woodmere Academy star, is currently at Northfield Mount Hermon, a Massachusetts prep school. Weiss said Nash was an honor student at Lawrence Woodmere, and with offers from Kentucky, Providence and St. John's, could have jumped straight to college.

LWA Community Celebrates Homecoming
Lawrence Woodmere Academy celebrated their homecoming festivities this Saturday, October 21st. The activities began with the Library Ribbon Cutting ceremony to unveil the refurbished library. The most notable changes include lowered windows, a leisure reading section, new seating, a new circulation desk, 12 new Dell computers, new carpeting and new lighting. This was made possible through the Annual Fund support of the Class of 2006.

Nine Students at LWA Named AP Scholars
The College Board named nine students at Lawrence Woodmere Academy as 2006 AP Scholars for "exceptional achievement" on college-level Advanced Placement exams. The AP program enables high school students to take college-level courses for college credit, advanced placement, or both. Only 18% of the more than one million students who take the exams are honored as AP Scholars for their AP scores.

LWA Launches New Website and Technology Initiatives
This fall, Alan Bernstein, Headmaster of Lawrence Woodmere Academy, hired a new Director of Information Technology to coincide with the unveiling of an interactive school website that has been underway for months, designed to further an innovative technology program aimed at enhancing the school's mission.

LWA Launches Program Teaching Chinese Languages and Culture
As China emerges as the next superpower, many parents in the metropolitan area have chosen to expose their children to Mandarin and Chinese culture in order to ensure a place for them in the climate of globalization. Lawrence Woodmere Academy has partnered with Jones Apparel Group to implement a program that immerses its students in Chinese culture, language and traditions.

Teacher and Author Laura Maffei Introduces Ancient Japanese Poetry to the 10th Grade
If Laura Maffei has her way, the 10th grade students at Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA) will be text messaging one another in tanka, a poetic form that originated in Japan 1300 years ago, by the end of the term. Maffei, a teacher at LWA since 2005, published a collection of 131 tanka poems called drops from her umbrella, released by Magpie Press in 2006.
